Welcome to the Duocaeli's Plotting Post for OFFline world AUs! Rather than doing monthly installments to play with this optional mechanic, we've decided to use this permanently installed post for players to come in and engage with our AU mechanic as they please.
How does the AU mechanic work?
Upon arriving in the OFF world of Crane City, characters will find themselves encountering NPC residents and others who react to them as familiar citizens, friends, and family. While not necessary, there is an optional mechanic for characters to also suddenly regain memories of a life they had in Crane City, whether it be an entire lifetime or as someone who moved in and took up residence later on. However, all characters will intrinsically know that the Alternative Universe memories they have of the OFF world aren't their real memories.
In addition, while characters may have OFFline friends or family resemble canon characters that can be apped, they must also retain some differences. This is to allow for creative freedom for characters being apped in.
OOCly, Duocaeli puts a focus on canon personalities and histories of characters, but we wanted to have the optional AU mechanic for those who wanted to play with it! If you don't want to opt in, there is no requirement to have a top-level or entry in this page. If you would like to engage, please follow our example for organization's sake.
This AU Plotting Post will be linked on every monthly mod post as a reminder for those who would like to engage in the optional AU mechanic.

Looking For: Are there any particular kinds of AU CR that you'd like for your character? Childhood friends? Bitter academic rivals? It may also help to include your character's attitude on the AU memories - do they find them confusing and want to embrace them? Or will they ignore them to the best of their ability?
While not necessary, mods also encourage having a FROZEN "Notes" comment reply to your own top-level that lets you edit and include new AU details as you plot!

Canon: Trigun Stampede
AU Occupation: A journalist! Who is on a little bit of thin ice because she keeps sticking her nose where it doesn't belong and finding stories she can't write about due to danger of retaliation... Don't worry about it.
AU Background:
✏️Meryl has a single father, Robert, who is definitely not Roberto but has a lot in common with him.
✏️She got her love of journalism from him and looks up to him despite having to constantly remind him to behave himself.
✏️Led a pretty normal, top-of-her-class life being the Class President in high school, graduating at the top there, and then graduating at the top again after studying journalism in college. She put a wild amount of time into studying which led to a lack of social life outside of her small clique of friends, and some naivety about the world outside of textbooks.
✏️She got a job in journalism after graduating and often gets herself in trouble because of it — she's always looking for the biggest stories and those tend to be in dangerous places with powerful people.
✏️She has a habit of following trails into the Underworld and either almost getting herself killed or having to make deals that she won't write stories about it to keep herself or family safe.
✏️Her job is on thin ice due to the lack of stories she can write as a result of all that, so she's normally given smaller pieces like sports games or gossip columns — things they can trust her to write and finish. Doesn't stop her from sticking her nose where it doesn't belong, though. She'll get the story of the century yet!
✏️There are some old, old videos of her as a pre-teen on not!Youtube of her practicing being a reporter behind the news desk, reporting on kid stuff. She's somehow managed to get herself locked out of the account and can't delete them, so she just hopes no one finds them. But they're there — she used her real name thinking it'd be useful for her resume someday, so they're not hard to find.
✏️She has some amateur photography pictures of flowers on some stock photo sites, as a small side hobby that she figures can help her photography skills for journalism.
Looking For: Meryl is 50/50 on these memories. On the one hand, they have quite a bit in common with her real life, in terms of academia and journalism. It's also fascinating to her to know how she could've grown up on Earth. It's hard to ignore her curiosity there. On the other hand, she's kind of trying to avoid them because of the way her fake dad reminds her of Roberto, and that's still an incredibly fresh wound. It's also just weird and invasive to have memories that aren't necessarily hers, and it's confusing and hard to deal with.
✏️Academic rivals would be nice for her to have! Surely she was constantly keeping up with who was getting what scores and who she should look out for her on her journey to be The Best in her class.
✏️People who tried to approach her in school and got ghosted in favor of studying instead??
✏️Those who exist in shady areas of the world for her to accidentally get herself into trouble with, or who at least know about her from all the stumbling into things she does. Maybe you even secretly try to keep people from killing her!
✏️Anyone else who might have interactions with journalists, she'd want to keep up on anyone important, or might end up getting to write a story on you! Or maybe you're also in her line of work, or adjacent to it!
✏️People who've found her embarrassing childhood videos and recognize her, or have used her stock images for things...
✏️She's an active person so there's likely a reason for her to run into just about anyone, so if you have any other ideas, go for it! I'm always open for both positive and negative relationships!

hilariously, the research probably always seems very bland at first, but then there is a twist that something very shady and bad was going down with w/e the editorial was about. he had absolutely nothing to do with any of that and wasn't involved at all, good job meryl.
