Artisan's Windspire Task: Retrieve the hiccuping hifloon. Reward: Complete Beginner's Checklist Milestone, daiya, and a feather capelet that keeps you extra cozy.
Welcome to the beginner dungeon for baby adventurers! Otherwise known as the Artisan's Windspire, this massive, ornate windmill is located in the far outskirts of Avisle City. Built long ago by an eccentric inventor, it's a beautiful piece of architecture… that doesn't work. Due to being completely nonfunctional, it's fallen into disrepair and been taken over by curious creatures, to be poked and prodded by curious adventurers!
For the beginner's checklist, they'll be tasked with finding the hiccuping hifloon. This mischievous creature will scurry into the windspire to evade capture; as travelers work upward to fetch it, they'll have to contend with the endless stairways and smatterings of platforms with a few challenges:
Chamber 1: Lonely Rolling Stars Cottonballs As the hifloon scampers through the first few floors, it wakes what seems to be… piles of fluff? These creatures–cottomari–are light as air, floating and bouncing about en masse, and generally simple to defeat. But if they roll into you, watch out: they're incredibly sticky.
You may get stuck to your partners, or to more cottomaris, your surroundings, the floor, the ceiling… and even after being freed, these seemingly harmless fluffs do have some unpleasant effects. Namely, they're more like fiberglass than cotton, leaving miniscule cuts all over the skin that they touch, which is agitating and itchy in places you can't seem to reach. Your partner may have to help you find some relief–consider it baby's first opportunity to share a little mana.
Chamber 2: A Breathless Work of Art The hifloon is always one step ahead, darting through a heavy wooden door ahead before it slams shut, leaving adventurers trapped in the inventor's puzzle box, AKA a large chamber with a floor that's a literal, giant puzzle and a maze of brass pipes running to and fro beneath it.
Adventurers will quickly realize this is a timed puzzle: the oxygen in this airtight room is finite, and the pipes must be opened to restore airflow. The pipe valves will open as correct puzzle pieces are placed, but it might get harder to think as characters gradually have trouble breathing, feeling faint, suffocated, and lightheaded. Panicking or using magic, particularly fire, will only burn up more oxygen.
To help them along, wispy orbs of wind will sometimes generate as valves are opened, which can be breathed in by characters who are feeling a little strangled. Be sure to ration them carefully!
Once the puzzle is completed, the valves–and exits–will open!
Chamber 3: Become Egg The final floors have seen better days–the ceiling is almost entirely ripped off the top of the spire, and has been co-opted by downy white birds. These pipips are cute, but extremely territorial. They've also caught the hifloon and are flying it to their nest to feed it to their young… oops.
Soon enough, a shadow blocks the sky above you for a moment before Big Pipip descends, ready to defend its young and its dinner.
Psycho Tickle: Big Pipip and the other pipips will surround you and your party before spraying soft feathers at you that tickle you breathless. Literally. They will tickle you until you run out of breath.
Mighty Peck: The regular pipips will move to the perimeter of the arena while Big Pipip readies a charge against you. It will chase you around the arena with repeated peck attacks three times until it tires.
While Big Pipip might tower above you in size, neither its attacks, nor that of the regular pipips, inflict much damage. Its attacks can easily be dodged or parried, and hitting it square in the head will stun it for several seconds. Eagle-eyed adventurers may also notice stairs running up the walls of the tower, leading to a collection of boulders that look eager to be set free and sent tumbling down to the floor…
Not that Big Pipip will make it easy for you! It will fly up and try to knock those eagle-eyed adventures back down to the bottom of the spire.
However you decide to cook this chicken, it remains a ɍɇłȺŧɨvɇłɏ ɇȺsɏ fɨǥħŧ.
...Huh?
For unlucky adventurers, the boss' form will flicker and start to warp… until it becomes something else entirely.
Razor Wings: The feathers, previous soft, are now deadly sharp and targeted. Big Pipip will whip them at you in three waves in a spray formation that spans the entire arena. Occasionally, one of the feathers will become a missile and chase a party member until it hits.
Screech: Big Pipip will let out an unholy scream that will cause extreme pain and leave all party members momentarily stunned.
Entrapment: The regular pipips will surround the party members while they are stunned and begin chirping. If they finish their song, that party member will become encased in an egg and will need to be broken out by their partner.
Well, that's weird! Suddenly Big Pipips' attacks are hitting a lot harder? At least its HP doesn't seem to have increased. Be sure to work together and keep at it to save that cute little hifloon!
Whether pummeled to death or crushed under rocks, once Big Pipip has been vanquished, the lost hifloon will finally come to its senses and hurry over to you. Claim your reward, and step into the glowing portal that will teleport you back to the dungeon entrance.
Congratulations on your first dungeon clear, adventurer! Isn't raiding fun?
